Publicado originalmente en 1970,este recopilatorio destaca por incluir la versión íntegra de la canción inédita de Pink Floyd, "Embryo". EMI, como sello discográfico, no solía tener fama de asumir riesgos; sin embargo, tras comprobar que la música progresiva se había hecho popular, en 1969 creó el sello especializado Harvest para aprovechar ese mercado. Al igual que muchos sellos discográficos de la época, se produjo un álbum de presentación de sus artistas a un precio asequible. Se trataba de Picnic, y la nómina de artistas de Harvest era lo suficientemente amplia e interesante como para soportar la venta al por menor de un álbum doble. El resultado fue una mezcla ecléctica de folk tradicional, rock duro, psicodelia y lo voluntariamente oscuro.

Picnic - A Breath of Fresh Air is a sampler issued originally by the Harvest Records label, originally released in 1970 and is remarkable for including the full-length version of the unreleased Pink Floyd song, "Embryo". EMI as a record label did not generally have a reputation for taking risks; however, having seen that progressive music had become popular, the niche Harvest label was launched in 1969 to take advantage of that market.
As with many record labels at the time, a budget-priced showcase album of their artists was produced. This was Picnic, and Harvest's roster of artists was large and interesting enough to support a double album retailing. The result was an eclectic mixture of traditional folk, hard rock, psychedelia and the wilfully obscure.
