Shortly before this 1960 concert took place, Miles Davis had begun to develop an onstage attitude that perfectly matched his image as an arrogant, insensitive performer. He stopped speaking to the audiences, never announced the tunes, played with his back to the public and abandoned the stage while other musicians in the group played their solos. Although texts of this kind abound and were published in every location the played, it must be said that perception soon changed, and that while Miles' behavior with the public continued to be criticized, the Davis Coltrane quintet's live recordings captured during the tour have come to be considered treasures.

The first reason for this is their rarity. Coltrane left Miles to form his own group soon after this early 1960 tour. Miles toured Europe again at the end of the year – with Stitt in Trane's place.
