GTO es el acrónimo de Girls Together Outrageously -algo así como “Chicas Escandalosamente Juntas”- aunque también ha sido descrito como Girls Together Often, Girls Together Ocasionally o Girls Together Only. Es considerado una creación de Frank Zappa. Sin embargo, lo cierto es que él tan sólo fue el responsable de reunir a sus integrantes bajo un mismo nombre y de producir su único álbum, Permanent Damage 
 
Sobre el escenario, The GTOs ofrecían un espectáculo heterogéneo en el que había lugar para la poesía, chistes y extrañas canciones. Frank Zappa y su socio Herb Cohen las contrataron para su sello Bizarre/ Straight, con el que grabaron su único álbum. Las carencias musicales de las integrantes se vieron suplidas por la presencia de músicos de primera línea durante las sesiones de grabación. Las GTOs contaron con la asistencia de Lowell George, Jeff Beck, Ry Cooder, Rod Stewart, Russ Titelman y varios miembros de The Mothers of Invention. Asimismo, el monkee Davy Jones colaboró en la composición junto a Miss Sparky. El resultado es un disco integrado por diecisiete cortes que intercalan canciones como «I’m in love with the Ooo-Ooo man» o «Circular circulation» con poemas y conversaciones como las que Pamela y Miss Christine mantienen vía telefónica con Cynthia Plaster Caster, famosa groupie de Chicago conocida por esculpir en yeso penes de rockeros.
 
Permanent Damage fue publicado en diciembre de 1969. Un mes después la banda se disolvió sin apenas haber pisado los escenarios. Tan sólo protagonizaron un puñado de actuaciones entre las que cabe destacar la de diciembre de 1968 en el Shrine Exposition Hall junto a Alice Cooper, The Mothers of Invention, Easy Chair y Wild Man Fischer.

Discover "Permanent Damage", the only album by the a cappela girl group from Los Angeles & The Sunset Strip scene: The GTOs (Girls Together Outrageously).
Produced by Frank Zappa, this psychedelic rock album was released in 1969.
 
The group was only active for two and a half years (1968-1970). The members were connected by their association with Zappa, who encouraged their artistic endeavours despite their limited vocal skills. The group performed live “only 4 or 5 times”, although they created a strong impression at their December 1968 performance at the Shrine Auditorium opening for The Mothers of Invention, Alice Cooper and Wild Man Fischer. A mix of theatrics, singing, dancing, wild costumes, and unusual lyrical content were staples of their act.
 
Their only album, Permanent Damage, (Straight Records) was produced in 1969 by Zappa with the assistance of Lowell George and Russ Titelman (tracks 7 and 11). The latter track also features Titelman's brother-in-law, guitarist Ry Cooder, both of whom appear on Captain Beefheart's Safe As Milk album.
Track 5 "The Captain's Fat Theresa Shoes" is a GTO comment on Beefheart's taste in footwear (his cousin Victor Hayden had introduced him to Pamela Des Barres). The songs are mixed in with conversations between the members of the group, friends, and others, including Cynthia Plaster Caster and Rodney Bingenheimer. The album features songwriting contributions from Lowell George, Jeff Beck and Davy Jones.
A young Rod Stewart (Jeff Beck's singer at the time) pops up on track 14.
