Jazz Goes to Junior College (Columbia CL1034) is a recording that shows a transitional phase of the quartet. It also marks a return to "live" albums after making various studio LPs. In fact, the first studio album by the quartet following the wave of live LPs was Brubeck Time.

Recorded in October 1954, the album celebrated Brubeck's appearance on the cover of Time magazine. After that, more "live" performances would be released on LP. Nearly all of Brubeck's previous quartet recordings had been made live on location, many of them at universities or colleges, a new place for jazz as the author of the original liner notes states (most likely producer George Avakian). This was, in fact, a "sequel" to the Brubeck Quartet hit Jazz Goes to College, which had been recorded during various college concerts in 1954.
