Para su 50 cumpleaños en 1997, David Bowie celebró un concierto en el Madison Square Garden a beneficio de Save the Children. Se unieron a él en el escenario amigos músicos como Robert Smith, Dave Grohl, Billy Corgan, Frank Black, Sonic Youth y Lou Reed.
 
El célebre concierto con el que David Bowie celebró su 50 cumpleaños el 9 de enero de 1997 en el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York en formato “combo” de tirada limitada numerada (125 copias), que incluye un DVD9 región libre (con el metraje del concierto tal como fue emitido en su día por una televisión estadounidense de pago por visión) y tres vinilos de color naranja, todo ello en una carpeta desplegable de tres cuerpos.
 
Además de adelantar varios temas del álbum Earthling, que saldría al mes siguiente, Bowie—acompañado por su banda formada por Reeves Gabrels (guitarra y coros), Gail Ann Dorsey (bajo, voz y teclados), Zack Alford (batería y percusión) y Mike Garson (teclados y coros)—recibió en el escenario a amigos y colegas como Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Robert Smith (The Cure), Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins), Frank Black (Pixies), Kim Gordon y Thurston Moore de Sonic Youth y, sobre todo, Lou Reed, con quien también interpretó revisiones de clásicos de The Velvet Underground como I'm Waiting for the Man y White Light/White Heat.

The soundboard recording of the famous concert with which David Bowie celebrated his fiftieth birthday on January 9, 1997, at the Madison Square Garden in New York available as a limited numbered “combo” edition (125 copies), featuring a region-free DVD9 (with footage of the show as originally broadcast by an American pay-per-view TV channel) and three orange-colored vinyl records, all housed in a tri-fold sleeve.
 
In addition to previewing several tracks from the album Earthling, which would be released the following month, Bowie—joined by his band including Reeves Gabrels (guitar, backing vocals), Gail Ann Dorsey (bass, vocals, keyboards), Zack Alford (drums, percussion) and Mike Garson (keyboards, backing vocals)—welcomed on stage friends and fellow musicians such as Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Robert Smith (The Cure), Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins), Frank Black (Pixies), Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, and above all Lou Reed, with whom he also performed reinterpretations of The Velvet Underground classics such as I'm Waiting for the Man and White Light/White Heat.
