“Beatlemania Is A Mark Of A Frenetic Era”
The quickly mutating 4-headed beast that was the Beatles were now at the mid-point of their first American tour. Prompted by the success of their Ed Sullivan appearance and straight from a British tour of seaside towns, the rush of the hot American air, the thunder of thousands of screaming girls and boys in their vicinity and the relentless onslaught of brain-numbing press junkets must have seemed maddening even to these street hardened herbets from Liverpool - The subjects of the questions shifting between puddle-shallow to canyon deep.
Still, the Beatles, brusquely a hardened live group after their lengthy stint in Hamburg and the sweaty burrow that was the Cavern, were now poised and note perfect - Despite the fact that with their famously tiny amps, they were hardly heard in the stadia of the US, and at risk of being sharply stung by an errant jelly-bean (George Harrison’s silly quip about them being their favourite candy was later to be much maligned by the band after they were almost-nightly pebble-dashed by the little bullet-shell-hard kernels.)
Whizzing from state to state as fast as the various promoters could set them up a show (The Beatles must have been to shysters and cowboys what the Velvet Underground were to other bands), arriving just gone midnight to avoid a stampede and being bustled past a gaggle of eager fans, the Beatles shows in Indianapolis were judged to be more reserved than the previous hullabaloos, (“This one was a bit quieter. You could almost hear us.” - John Lennon), drama framed the first show as Ringo went his own way, apparently racing a police car around the track at a local circuit, losing track of time and only appearing again minutes before the band were due on the stage.
